Art and Design

Intent

At Amble First School the teaching of Art and Design:

  • should engage, inspire and challenge pupils
  • should equip pupils with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design
  • should think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design
  • should understand how both art and design reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation
Implementation

We follow the National Curriculum for Art and Design which sets out the statutory programmes of study for Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2.

“All children are artists” – Pablo Picasso

Art and design is a fantastic way for all children to express themselves, be creative and to explore.

At Amble First School we make links with the arts to all areas of the curriculum wherever possible. We celebrate our creations through displays, assemblies and sharing work with pupils and parents. We work with local artists to create a range of artwork from paintings to visual installations. Our work with Woodhorn Museum has given our children the opportunity to explore the Ashington “Pitmen Paintings” and their multi-layered reflections on mining, community and family life. Pupils have been encouraged to express their ideas, knowledge and understanding in the creation of art and have used this inspiration  to improve their skills.
